On Tuesday, October 15th, St. Mary Catholic School celebrated exactly 100 years since the school opened its doors to begin instruction. What better way to recognize the occasion than by welcoming Bishop David Toups to come celebrate Mass with us! After Mass, the Theology Club presented a skit in commemoration of the founding of our school. The school’s birthday party continued as our parents and supporters joined us in the cafeteria for a lovely potato soup and cupcakes. We are at a memorable and a critical time in our school’s history. Here is a snippet from the conclusion of our skit, in reference to struggles that the school faced during the Great Depression:
“They were able to bring in some money to cover costs. The community came together, shared what they had, and supported those that had nothing, continuing the tradition of providing a quality, Catholic education for Orange, TX.
Our school depended on the hard work and efforts of the staff, students, and community, and still does to this day. 100 years later, St. Mary Catholic School has provided education for our area, through times of growth and of decline. In all situations, the school has continued because of the combined efforts of the whole community.”
We plan to commemorate our 100th year one more time with a Centenary Mass on Sunday, November 17th at St. Mary Catholic Church on Cherry St. Everyone is invited to join us and Bishop Toups for Mass, a program, and a lunch at the parish hall.
